About Lake City

Lake City is nestled along the banks of Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River, located on Highway 61, also known as the Great River Road, just 68 miles southeast of Minneapolis/St. Paul and 34 miles east of Rochester, MN. The central location allows one to spend less time on the road and more time boating, golfing, snowmobiling, shopping and dining! Lake City offers four seasons of things to do on and around Lake Pepin. Our dramatic landscapes and cultural and recreational activities rival northern Minnesota, but with a longer season, warmer water, slower pace and none of the crowds.

A WWII bomber went down in Lake Pepin

On the snowy afternoon of December 15, 1944, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator (serial 44-49908) crashed through the ice of Lake Pepin during a ferry flight out of St. Paul. It went down in a snow squall between Maple Springs, Minnesota, and Pepin, Wisconsin, a few miles down the lake from Lake City, and all three men aboard were killed: Capt. Dan D. Mitchell, Buddy B. Beasley and Edward A. Demski.

Three Lake City firemen pushed a boat across the thin ice to reach the site, but they found only scattered debris. Divers recovered the airmen in April 1945, and Army salvage crews raised much of the plane that spring. Accounts differ on what happened to the rest of the wreckage, and no one has publicly reported finding it.

Pin is approximate. No exact coordinates were published. Accounts put the site about ¾ mile off the Pepin, Wis. pier, roughly a third of the way across toward Maple Springs.
